Lisa + Samantha {Sweet 16 Mom/Daughter Portrait Session / New York City}

As I was prepping for the Saturday afternoon photo session with Samantha and Lisa, I couldn’t help but feel a little sentimental. You see, Lisa and her daughter Samantha were traveling to New York City from Texas to celebrate her upcoming 16th birthday. Years ago (almost 20 which is just plain scary!) my parents had given me the choice in locations for a trip for my own 16th birthday. Without a moment’s hesitation, I said New York. Like most people’s first trips to Manhattan, our trip then and their trip now held a lot of similarities – walking around Times Square, going to a Broadway show and people watching…lots of people watching :) The main difference? Portrait sessions like this didn’t really exist back then! I am so happy I had the opportunity to do this for Lisa and Samantha, so 20 years from now, they can look back on the carefree weekend they shared!

Samantha, it’s hard to believe you are sixteen, you’re such a beautiful, sweet woman! Hair and makeup by the talented Sabrina Gilbert.

This was Lisa and Samantha’s first visit to Central Park, so I made sure to take them to the highlights including the Plaza Hotel, Literary Walk, Bethesda Terrace and Fountain…

Love the coordinating maxi dresses the ladies wore! Lisa looks stunning in the peacock blue tone…

I always have mixed feelings shooting in the lower passage of Bethesda Terrace. But on this day, the light was beyond fantastic and both Samantha and Lisa look gorgeous against this tiled wall!

Seriously, Samantha is stunning!!! I love this next shot…

Couldn’t resist a few black and white shots. I love the contrast in this next one…

From here, we headed down to the Highline and popped into a burger joint to do a quick outfit change. Their casual attire is perfect for the more wild natural setting along the elevated train tracks…

The next series of shots are some of my favorites from the day – carefree and gorgeous! Oh to be sixteen again :) And might I add, Samantha’s makeup still looks flawless an hour and half later in 85+ degree heat!

Another of my favorites – they were just joking around but I love the natural candidness of the shot…

Samantha, you have a the world in front of you and I have no doubt you will shine as brightly along your journey as you do in these portraits! Lisa, you are a proud mama, having raised a beautiful, caring individual. It was such a pleasure meeting you both!!!

And now in honor of this session and the fact that just happens to be Throwback Thursday, a glimpse at the trip that sparked my desire to call this crazy city home…Please refrain from laughing at the bangs and oh, is that a scrunchie on my wrist?!!! And yes, that is a camera in my hands. A film camera…might even be one of those disposable kinds…

Above, somewhere in Central Park, on roller blades, which were like, the coolest new thing back then. Yes, I just dated myself back to the start of roller blades. Even worse, AOL and this thing called the world wide web were also just beginning…

Below, since my dear older brother was away at university, I was allowed to bring a friend. I have since lost track of Carrie, but I am so happy she was on this journey with me! We fed the horses, roller-bladed throughout the park, discovered a fascination with Abercrombie & Fitch and got to see one of the best Broadway shows I have ever been to see, Tommy. I would love love love for it to make a comeback!!!

It was by chance we managed to get tickets for that night’s show and they were not cheap so I really have to thank my parents for giving in to our begs and pleas as it was the only show we wanted to see! We were pretty stoked when we had this picture taken. Sadly, I can not find the shot of us all dressed up later that night for the show itself. So I’ll leave you with this gem in our “we are definitely not from New York” outfits :)
