Every so often, I pop over to CraigsList to see who is looking for a photographer for events or commercial work. Most of the time, the posts are from photographers looking for models and I skim right through them. But one day this past February, a post jumped out at me. Mathew from San Francisco was looking for a Manhattan-based photographer to capture one of the most nerve-wracking times of his life, that split second when he gets down on one knee to ask the woman he loves to marry him. He already had his plan – sunset during their April visit at the Top of the Rock, overlooking the Empire State Building. He even had a small diagram of where he wanted to be positioned. I immediately liked his organization and the thought he had put into making this special for Fabi and shot him an email. I was thrilled to be his photographer of choice, then we just had to wait for April…
April 24, 2014 – The day was beautiful, from the inside looking out. But outside, the wind was gusting upwards of 20 mph and I knew it’d make for an interesting situation 70 stories up. In the end, the wind only came in small bursts so it was manageable. As I waited for Mathew and Fabi to arrive, I scoped the scene and got some shots around Manhattan. I can now cross Top of the Rock off of my “Things To See in NYC list.” After seven years living here, it seems the list just gets longer and longer!
If you look closely enough, and you know which set of round buildings to look for, you can see my home-base at the top right corner of the park ;)
Right on schedule (a man with a plan and a watch!), Mathew and Fabi showed up. He had secretly text me a selfie when they left the hotel so I knew what the both of them were wearing!
Mathew was clever and hid the ring box in his sock. He even practiced walking around with it in SF to make sure it wouldn’t fall out. It was a bulky box so it was the perfect spot to go undetected. Unless of course you are heading to a rooftop observation deck and have to go through security! He admitted later, he managed to pull it out of his sock, slip it through the security cameras and get it into his pocket without Fabi being the wiser. Then he made a quick excuse to go to the bathroom to return it to it’s secret hiding place!
I love this shot, ring in hand and soooo nervous :)
And then he reveals me…again, I love Fabi’s look!
Congratulations Fabi & Mathew!!! You are such a sweet couple and I love how easily you make each other laugh! I wish you all the best as you start your journey to marriage :)
