There are a number of reasons I love being a photographer. Creating a form of art, expressing my creativity, documenting moments big and small that will visually last longer on this planet than I will… But my favorite aspect? The people that are brought into my small circle of the world. People like Shayfer James.
Finding this gem of an alley in Jersey City was just the start of our fun…
It was a morning like any other when I received an introductory email from a dear friend, putting me in touch with Mr. James, a musician looking to do a Lifestyle shoot around his new home of Jersey City to help promote his new albums and indiegogo campaign. We exchanged a few emails, he sent me some song samples to serve as inspiration and I was hooked. His soulful voice combined with beautiful, somewhat haunting piano is nothing short of fantastic. But I’m not a music writer, if you like to hear more of his work (which I really can not encourage enough!) please check out his campaign here. There’s even video :)
Mr. James wanted imagery that would complement the digital release of a six-song EP (amazingly recorded in eight hours), Red Room Vol 2. This unique album (along with other perks, depending on the donation) is being given as a thank you to supporters of his next full-length EP Haunted Things.
This next image was a bit of a fluke. We had been taking some serious shots and decided to lighten things up a bit. I believe I was actually singing as I took this shot, which was clearly amusing to Mr. James. It’s my favorite, even though it only serves as a candid outtake from the session…
We ended our session in celebration, but I couldn’t help shooting a few more shots of a man and his whiskey.
I am honored to call Mr. James a friend. His talent is without measure and if he’s ever performing in your neck of the woods, I can not say enough that you should check him out. In the meantime, please think about supporting a great artist and visit his indiegogo campaign today!
