Crif Dog Classic…Surely a new Fourth of July tradition!

I always feel it isn’t the Fourth of July without a hot summer sun and an outdoor barbecue complete with music, beer and mayhem. This year was no different, except my barbecue included 400 unknown friends and three live bands. Oh and hot dogs, a lot of hot dogs! When I was asked to shoot the First Annual Crif Dog Classic, I jumped at the chance. It’s not every day you get an up-close look at competitive eating. Special thanks to the HHR Media Group and Don Povia for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such a fantastic event. Looking forward to next year already!

Held at Roberta’s in Brooklyn, it was a great venue to give the party a backyard feel…

Mmmmm….the Crif Dog specialty, “The Chihuahua” was the featured dog of the day! Nothing like a bacon-wrapped hot dog with avocado and sour cream in you belly!

Happy Fourth of July!

Roberta’s was also serving their wood-oven baked pizzas! Yum!

Regan Smith Clarke and his business partner Nick Porter made the trek from Boston with the vintage art-inspired T-shirts!

Empire Mayonnaise, one of the many event sponsors, had a special flavor on hand for the day, Kobayashi Miso.

Dan Rollman and Corey Henderson, co-founders of the company RecordSetter, were the official judges of the day. In addition to the hot-dog eating contest, world records were set for “Most rubber bands to knock off a cup on a man’s head while he’s singing in one minute,” “Fastest time to stick 50 stickers to a person’s face,” and “Most people to hopscotch in one minute”

And the sticker goes to…

I saw her later and she still had the stickers on, here’s hoping she was wearing sunscreen!

Andy Suzuki & The Method were the first music performance of the day…

Next up, The Electric Mess…

And to end the band portion of the day, the Wild Yaks. Finger on the Pulse provided their DJ stylings in the meantime…

Love that people came out in their patriotic gear!

The Grady Bunch…awesome family who came out to support their son, Grady Kelly, Brooklyn resident and rookie to the contest…

These will all be consumed in a matter of ten minutes…

Pat from Moonachie…

Dave “US Male” Goldstein and Stephanie “Chilita” Torres are ready…

Team Reddit looks worried…

Quite a crowd…

Dexter Holland, lead singer of The Offspring, was a celebrity judge. Maggie Gray, lead anchor for SI.com hosted the event.

Evette Rios, from ABC’s The Chew, also celebrity judge…

Tony Luke, Jr. rounded out the celebrity judges….

Takeru Kobayashi, “the greatest eater in the world,” didn’t disappoint the crowd and fans…

Surrounded by all these men doesn’t deter Ms. Torres. She takes 2nd in the challenge, inhaling 31 dogs and buns!

Grady Kelly, happy to be finished…

Believe it or not, this is his excited face! Just announced winner and told he beat out rival Joey Chestnut’s devoured dog’s number by .5 (meaning he ate the dog, not the bun)…

Wow…

Regan Smith Clarke, Pat from Moonachie, Nick Porter and Don Povia are all pretty psyched at the day’s turnout!

Tom “Goose” Gilbert is also happy to be finished!

Apparently 68.5 weren’t enough!
